Scope & content
Series consists of original 35mm Kodachrome transparencies created by photographer Rudi Christl for his book Toronto in Pictures and Words, published by McClelland and Stewart in 1977. It was the first major photographic publication to depict Toronto life in the 1970s, documenting the everyday activities of its people, its neighbourhoods, natural landscape, and built environment. The book, which includes text written by former city councillor William Kilbourn, was produced in two editions, each with a print run of 10,000 copies. The later was a sesquicentennial edition published in 1983 to celebrate Toronto's 150th anniversary the following year. A total of 45 of the photographs in this series were published in the first edition (items 1-45); while 33 of the images were unpublished outtakes, not used in the book (items 46-78).
