- Scope & content
- Fonds consists of 408 photographic prints and transparencies created by Toronto photographer Rudi Christl over a 40-year period, from the early 1970s to 2012. Photographs are about Toronto: its natural and built environment, its people, its cultural activities, and its diverse urban character. Christl's ability to capture the city's dynamic energy led to the publication of three photography books about Toronto: "Toronto in Pictures and Words" (McClelland & Stewart, 1977, 1983), "Toronto: the Celebration" (Aura One E. Inc., 1999), and "On Toronto: An Urban Portrait" (Aura One E. Inc., 2012). Fonds contains the original 35mm transparencies that were used for his publications, as well as sets of unpublished outtakes. Photographs include many images of Toronto landmarks such as City Hall and Nathan Phillips Square, Goodham & Worts, the Art Gallery of Ontario, and Casa Loma; as well as Toronto events like the Canadian National Exhibition, the Santa Claus Parade, Caribana, and the Pride Parade. Portraits of David Crombie, Sylvia Fraser, Irving Layton, Murray McLauchlan, and Harold Town are among these sets of photographs. Fonds also contains a portfolio of 27 unpublished prints titled "Toronto in the Seventies" taken by Christl in the 1970s early in his career as a photographer. There is also a related set of 30 original, unpublished 35mm transparencies by Christl taken in the 1970s.
