Scope & content
Series consists of photographs created by Rudi Christl between 1995 and 1999. They form a photographic essay about the city of Toronto which is the basis for his book, "Toronto: The Celebration," published by Aura One Enterprises Inc. in 1999. The photographs document the diverse, multicultural activities of Torontonians and explore the city’s changing built environment and natural landscape. As a photographer who published two earlier works about Toronto, Christl sought to rediscover the city at a time when it amalgamated with other municipalities to form the new City of Toronto, and as a result, many of the photographs focus on events, activities, and properties in the former City of Toronto as well as Etobicoke, North York, and Scarborough. The series includes photographs of the Scarborough Civic Centre, the R.C. Harris Filtration Plant, Black Creek Pioneer Village, St. Lawrence Hall, St. Lawrence Market, Gooderham & Worts, the National Trade Centre, Casa Loma, the Winter Garden Theatre, Fillmore’s Hotel, St. James Cathedral, Yonge Street, and Mirvish Village. There are also photographs of Toronto's skyline, the waterfront, city parks, and events such as the Santa Claus Parade, Festival of Lights, Caribana Parade, Taste of the Danforth, Gay Pride Parade, the CNE, and the Beaches Easter Parade.
