- Scope & content
- Collection consists of a wide and varied amount of material related to Toronto and its history. It spans the 19th and 20th centuries (with a few records in the 18th) and encompasses material about many daily and/or significant events, people, and places in Toronto. Topics particularly well represented in the collection include military life, sports, education, advertising, the arts, tourism, and stores.Records in the collection that document Toronto visually include photographs, postcards, prints and drawings, and maps. Together these show the overall shape of the city as it grew, and many well-known buildings, parks, the waterfront, etc. There are also portraits of people, notably soldiers, as well as private citizens.Textual records featuring descriptions of Toronto people, places and events include books, newspapers, magazines, and broadsides. Some are substantial runs, while others are individual issues covering prominent events. Local histories, real estate sales yearbooks, society blue books, and others give a detailed picture of certain aspects of the city.Ephemera (works on paper that were meant to be discarded after use) forms a significant portion of the collection, from advertising blotters to transit tickets to school exam papers. This ephemera provides a glimpse into the often-discarded details of everyday life. The collection will be of interest to anyone researching Toronto history, from the major events that shaped the city to the minutiae of daily life.
