Scope & content
Series consists of over 200 concert programs accumulated and kept by musician Frank S. Welsman over the course of his career as a musician, music educator, and as conductor of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (1906-1918). There are also 1970s and 1980s programs and publications from the Toronto Symphony Orchestra that were kept by the Welsman family. Series contains a near-complete run of programs for the iteration of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra which lasted from 1906 to 1918. Included are programs from its first concert performance held in April, 1907, when it formed out of the Toronto Conservatory of Music, through to its demise in 1918. Programs include most of the regular Massey Hall subscription concerts that Welsman conducted, which featured many celebrated guest artists of the time, such as Madame Louise Homer, Johanna Gadski, Alma Gluck, Mischa Elman, Fritz Kreisler, Efrem Zimbalist, and the great composer-pianist Sergei Rachmaninoff. There are also programs for various orchestra tours in Ontario at venues located in Orillia, Owen Sound, Peterborough, and St. Catharines. Programs for other concerts that featured Frank S. Welsman as a solist, as an instrumentalist for ensembles or chamber groups, or where he led choirs or student recitals also form part of this series. Also included are programs for The National Chorus of Toronto, the Academy String Quartette, and recitals that featured other distinguished musicians of Toronto like Luigi von Kunits, Leo Smith, and Ernest MacMillan. Also of note, there is an 1891 concert program for an earlier orchestra named the Toronto Symphony Orchestra under conductor Francisco D'Auria.
