Scope & content
Fonds consists of programs, scrapbooks, reviews, and published works relating to Toronto-born musician, music educator, and Toronto Symphony Orchestra conductor (1906-1918) Frank Squire Welsman. Programs include those for nearly all Toronto Symphony Orchestra concerts at Massey Hall under Welsman from 1907-1918, as well as concerts performed by other local ensembles, including choirs, chamber groups, and student groups, that often featured Welsman and his contemporary Luigi von Kunits as instrumentalists. Scrapbooks contain press notices and reviews, some correspondence and photographs, as well as other ephemera. Fonds also includes Welsman's collection of sheet music and sound recordings on vinyl. This fonds is a fairly comprehensive and complete account of Welsman's career in music, especially in relation to his activities leading the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. The material in this fonds was collected and accumulated by Frank S. Welsman and his family. His son George Welsman donated programs, scrapbooks, and press notices to the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, which was incorporated into their archival collection. The archival holdings of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra were donated to the City of Toronto Archives in 2009. Another set of Welsman material was later donated to the City of Toronto Archives by John Welsman, the grandson of Frank Welsman. These materials were brought together and arranged by the City of Toronto Archives in 2016.
