- Scope & content
- Memo: re the Algonquin, Nipissing and Iroquois Indians, comprising four hundred families, who have requested a grant of land in the Township of Lawrence. Refers to extract of Report dated April 22, 1839 by Hon. James B. Macaulay which sets forth that the Algonquins claimed as their hunting grounds, lands fronting on the Upper Canada side of the Ottawa River. States that their claims have neither been extinguished by surrender nor positively admitted. Advises that although 245 Indians from Lake of Two Mountains have established themselves at Maniwaki, the present applicants fmd that Maniwaki is too far from their hunting grounds to be accessible to them. Recommends a sale of land be authorized for them at a rate of twenty cents per acre payable from Indian funds, including payment for the expense of subdivision into 100 acre lots.
