Scope & content
Interpretation panel at 4475-4495, boulevard Saint-Laurent, from the series « La Main, toujours de son temps – Sherbrooke/Mont-Royal / The Main, Forever in Tune – Sherbrooke/Mont-Royal » installed by Les Amis du boulevard Saint-Laurent in 2010. From 1887 until 1937, the Mount Royal Hotel graced the southeast corner of Saint-Laurent Boulevard and Mount Royal Avenue. The property was sold by descendants of innkeeper Victor Vallières to barber and innkeeper Joseph Landry in 1905. It also included an adjoining building on the Main, which housed shops and apartments. In 1920, the hotel was expanded southward and the corner shop was rented to the United Cigar Store. In 1939, tavern-keepers Paul and Maurice Landry acquired the property and replaced the existing structures with the current edifice . In keeping with the architectural trends of its day, the Landry Building boasted “streamlined” features rendered in yellow and brown brick, large square windows on the upper floors, and commercial space at street level, including a one-storey annex with a curved corner for the United Cigar Store. The Landry brothers’ Belmont Tavern, named after the nearby Belmont Theatre, occupied one of the other commercial spaces. The upper storeys were rented to Canadian Lady Corset Company Ltd. and other clothing manufacturers. The cigar store was replaced in 1964 by the Golden Corner Snack Bar, which occupied the corner until 1989. The Landrys closed their tavern in the late 1960s and sold the property two decades later. Since then, the upper floors of the Landry Building have housed offices, and the nightclub Le Belmont sur le Boulevard has occupied the former tavern. Illustrations : 1 Chas. E.
