Scope & content
Interpretation panel at 4350-4358, boulevard Saint-Laurent, from the series « La Main, toujours de son temps – Sherbrooke/Mont-Royal / The Main, Forever in Tune – Sherbrooke/Mont-Royal » installed by Les Amis du boulevard Saint-Laurent in 2010. At the turn of the 20 th century, the property at the northwest corner of Marie-Anne Street and Saint-Laurent Boulevard belonged to Joseph Octave Villeneuve , mayor of the Saint-Jean-Baptiste suburb until its annexation in 1886, councillor and then mayor of the City of Montreal until 1896, and Canadian senator until his death in 1901. In 1906, his cousin, Léonidas Villeneuve, lumber merchant and former mayor of the Town of Saint-Louis, constructed the existing three-storey edifice . From 1907 until 1923, the corner shop housed the grocery store of Raoul Prévost, who lived in one of the apartments above. For the next three decades, it was the hardware store of M.L. Caplan, and Union Bakery occupied the other shop. By the mid-1940s, the upper levels housed factories, and a five-storey extension to the rear was built in 1948. The Crown Apron Building, as the expanded ensemble was called, housed Olympic Sportswear and other clothing manufacturers, as well as Miller Display Fixtures, which made forms for fitting and displaying clothing . The property was purchased in 1952 by merchant Joseph Schreter , who had opened a clothing and footwear store at Saint-Dominique and Ontario Streets in 1928, then on the Main near De Maisonneuve Boulevard in 1935. Since 1956, the family business J. Schreter, Inc. has occupied 4350 Saint-Laurent . In 1997, the store expanded into the ground floor of the adjacent building (4358).
