- Interpretation panel at 4396-4410, boulevard Saint-Laurent, from the series « La Main, toujours de son temps – Sherbrooke/Mont-Royal / The Main, Forever in Tune – Sherbrooke/Mont-Royal » installed by Les Amis du boulevard Saint-Laurent in 2010. Today, the three four-storey buildings that make up 4396-4410 Saint-Laurent Boulevard are part of a single property whose upper floors share a common entrance (4398) . In the early 20 th century, they were three separate properties: the north and middle lots housed wooden warehouses and a small masonry building occupied the south lot . The existing building on the north lot was constructed in 1919 by engineer Isaac Goodman and merchant Louis Herman for an automobile showroom with clothing factories above. The middle building, designed by Charles Davis Goodman for merchant Joseph Cohen in 1924 , originally housed Cohen’s Furniture Store and clothing manufacturers on the upper levels. Both buildings feature carefully designed brickwork , high ceilings and abundant fenestration. Their upper levels were interconnected in the 1930s , when Cohen became owner of the two structures. In 1968, the property was acquired by retired manufacturer Joseph H. Gross, who continued to rent the upper storeys to manufacturers. Since the early 1980s, it has been managed by his grandson, Bruce Burnett, and tenants include small businesses and creative entrepreneurs on the upper floors and furniture stores at street level. The original building on the south lot, owned by merchants Abraham and Lyon Cohen, housed shops and apartments until the late 1940s, when the upper storeys were rented to small manufacturers. It was demolished in the 1970s, and the vacant lot was acquired by Gross in 1984. In 2005, the existing building, which houses a specialized shop (4396) and offices (4398), was constructed . Its architecture was inspired by its two neighbours to the north, which have since been renovated . Illustrations : 1, 2, 5, 6 Photographies, Roch Coulombe 3 Chas. E.
