- Scope & content
- Series consists of photographs of human interventions observed and documented by Hickox in natural landscapes on Toronto Island. The interventions vary in impact and duration. Some are temporary or short-term changes such as a cluster of hanging paper lanterns, portable metal barriers placed around a stand of trees, or boats stored for the season. Other interventions have a longer-term purpose or impact: an apiary, a vegetable garden, a fire hydrant, a slowly eroding concrete pier. Still others result in permanent changes to the landscape – a felled tree, a sand dune naturalization project, the removal of an old box hedge. In this way, Hickox captures how people have interacted with the landscape and how, over time, the landscape has been altered by their activities.
