Scope & content
Series consists of full body photographic portraits of Toronto Island workers -- described by Hickox as "unsung heroes" -- who cultivate and maintain the physical landscape or provide services to residents and visitors. Hickox's portraits document a variety of roles, such as gardeners, arborists, Toronto Water staff, camp counsellors and volunteers, bike mechanics and rental employees, boat and dock hands, cleaning and maintenance staff, lifeguards, and farm workers. Many are municipal employees who work for the City of Toronto. In general, Hickox's subjects are identified by first name and photographed at their work sites and in their work clothes. A number of subjects are also identified by their role.
