- Scope & content
- Series consists of photographs of sheds, clubhouses, compost bins, forts, bunkhouses, boat houses, and houseboats belonging to Toronto Island residents. Hickox's photographs capture the process of aging and the effects of the environment on these structures. Her images record weathered and fading surfaces, walls covered in vines or screened by dense vegetation, and deteriorating buildings shrouded in tarpaulins to protect them from the elements. Age is also indicated by the accumulation of objects around the buildings – the garden tools, old furniture, boats, bicycles, and building materials that support life on the Island. While the majority of structures recorded by Hickox have practical uses, a subset of images in this series focus on structures that support play – specifically forts and treehouses.
