- Scope & content
- Fonds consists of records created, accumulated and used by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO). Records include files by or about each music director and conductor of the orchestra, among them eminent musicians Sir Ernest MacMillan, Seiji Ozawa, Sir Andrew Davis, and Jukka-Pekka Saraste. There are also files concerned with orchestra members, guest artists, and other orchestras and ensembles. These records generally include correspondence, contracts, news clippings, promotional and marketing material. A near-complete run of TSO programs from 1923 to 2008 for in-house subscription series and special events concerts at Massey Hall and Roy Thomson Hall, and Ontario Place concerts and out-of-town tours are also included. Fonds also consists of symphony newsletters published between 1945-1996, including TSO News, Toronto Symphony News, Toronto Symphony Times, and Quarter Note. Administrative records relating to the scheduling, organization, and marketing of TSO concerts, special events, and tours are included and comprise about half of the textual records in this fonds. These files span the years 1964 to 2000. Records also include a selection of brochures, posters and other printed material. Fonds also consists of approximately 35,000 photographs showing the orchestra and guest artists. Additionally, there audio recordings with over 60 interviews with TSO musicians, conductors, and administrative staff conducted between 1977 and 1991. A flood in Massey Hall in 1943 destroyed many of the records, photographs and playbills created by the symphony during its first 20 years of operation. Therefore records from that time period are sparse.
