Scope & content
Subseries consists of photographs documenting the construction of the St. Clair line of the Toronto Civic Railways, which ran west from the corner of Yonge St. and St. Clair Ave to the Grand Trunk Railways' Northern Division tracks at Station St (now Caledonia Rd.). Construction of this line was started in September 1911; the line was officially opened to the public on August 25, 1913.Arranged chronologically, the photographs focus on views of the Spadina Fill, a problematic area of track adjacent to Wells Hill Rd. and the Nordheimer Ravine. This stretch of track needed to be brought up to a more level grade, requiring large amounts of fill to be transported in. Shortly before grading was complete, a heavy rain triggered a severe landslide that swept away much of the fill. A bridge was later constructed to span the ravine.Subseries also includes images of cars #102 and 104.
