Scope & content
b&w photograph with a white border. An outdoor scene, in which a group of passengers are shown aboard a ship. The passengers are standing on the upper deck of the ship, looking over the railing and smiling. On the left side of the photograph, Alice Eckstein (third person from the left) and Sam Shenkier (first person from the left) are depicted. Narrative: Alice Shenkier (nee Eckstein) was the donor's mother. Due to Sam Shenkier's wealth, which was amassed through the Diamond Exchange in Belgium, the Shenkier family was able to afford tickets out of Europe on the Serpa Pinto. The Serpa Pinto was a Portuguese transport ship, which made regular trips from Lisbon (Portugal) to Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), New York City, Philadelphia and Baltimore (USA). It has been said that the ship transported about 7800 refugees, among them hundreds of Jews during the Second World War.
