- Scope & content
- b&w photograph with a white border. An outdoor scene, in which a man and a woman are posing on the deck of a ship. In the background, a lifeboat is visible. Those depicted in the photograph are Alice Eckstein and her cousin Frank. Narrative: Alice Shenkier (nee Eckstein) was the donor's mother. Due to Sam Shenkier's wealth, which was amassed through the Diamond Exchange in Belgium, the Shenkier family was able to afford tickets out of Europe on the Serpa Pinto. The Serpa Pinto was a Portuguese transport ship, which made regular trips from Lisbon (Portugal) to Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), New York City, Philadelphia and Baltimore (USA). It has been said that the ship transported about 7800 refugees, among them hundreds of Jews during the Second World War.
