- Scope & content
- Letter: referring to St. Regis Indians charged with hunting without a license. "It appears that from pretty well time immemorial these Indians have been in the habit in the spring of the year of travelling about trading their baskets and other native manufactures with the inhabitants of the towns and villages along the route to Smith Falls, and in the district east and west of that neighbourhood and in conjunction with that means of making their maintenance, of hunting small furs, principally muskrats as opportunity might offer." "Much to their surprise some five of their number were arraigned last April before the Police Magistrate for the County of Victoria charged with hunting muskrats within the Province of Ontario without a license." Questions whether the O.C. dated 26 April 1907 (printed in Ontario Gazette 11 May 1907) was ultra vires of sections of Game Ordinance (Sec. 46 a & b and 48a).
