- Scope & content
- Letter: reporting on some St. Regis Indians who were charged with hunting muskrats without a license, contrary to Ontario Fish and Game Act They were hunting in the County of Victoria. Two were acquitted because they lived in Ontario. 'The fact is that a large number of indians come from St. Regis each year for this special purpose [muskrat hunting] and have been doing so for a great number of years. One of the men convicted has been hunting in this same vicinity for over twenty years [circa 1890]. Another indian [sic], one of those acquitted, has been hunting for 40 years [circa 1870]. The outcome of the decision of this case if left the way it stands, means that there are only two indians [sic] out of a band that will be able to trap in this country again without paying a license, which is practically prohibitive." Asks for aid from Dept. in making appeal.
