- Memo: refers to squatters in the Township of South Algona, identifies lots occupied by them, amount of acreage cleared and nwnber of years they have been in occupation. States that in May 1858, the Crown Lands Agent replying to the Superintendent General stated that the Indians are of the Algonquin tribe, and carne to Golden Lake from the Lake of Two Mountains fifty years ago [1808]. Notes that one Indian, Michel Pesantawatch. a chief, wears a silver medal which he claims was given to his father by George ill. Advises that the Superintendent General. in his letter dated Jan. 14, 1859, informed that these Indians had no annuities or interest accruing from land funds with which the Department could purchase these lands for them. Commissioner recommends they be allowed to purchase the lots occupied by them for the nominal rate of six pence an acre, payable in five annual instalments with interest.
