- Scope & content
- Report: re the Algonquins and Nipissings. States that the government granted them 45,750 acres on the River Desert as compensation for their hunting grounds on the River Ottawa which were taken from them. Advises that a certain number of Algonkins have traded their sterile soil at Lake of Two Mountains for a fresh location at Maniwaki. States that to aid the settlement in its infancy they received a share of the Provincial grant, but seem to have been lost sight of since then. States that their claims to their former territorial possessions have been justly said and the measure of their compensation should be to place and maintain them in a condition of at least equal advantage which they would have enjoyed in their former state. These people have no other source of revenue. Transcript of Father Dufresne's report attached. Some differences [source A.S.S.S. M1644 No. 89].
