- Scope & content
- Petition: (French and English transcripts supplied) advising that they do not wish to settle at Lake Temiscaming. Describes their dissatisfaction with the government after 200 years of trying to have their claims recognized. Points out that the government of Upper Canada have dealt fairly with the Indians for the lands they took, but such has not been the case with the government of Lower Canada. They have received no compensation for the lands they have lost. Commends them for the act for the protection of Indian lands but states that there are none to administrate if they do not give them any. Request lands in the more favourable townships north of Ottawa if their hopes for a settlement in the Seigneury of the Lake of Two Mountains are not realized. They ask that lands be reserved for Indians in the places where settlers are beginning to go; for protection against frauds because of their inexperience; for the application of public funds which the petitioners have as much right to as citizens of European descent; and that they receive assistance in the clearing and cultivating of land.
