- Scope & content
- Report: quotes the report of June 17, 1839 that recommended that these Tribes be settled upon a tract of land in the rear of the present range of Townships on the Ottawa River and should receive support, encouragement and assistance as may supply the place of their former means of subsistence. In response the present Commissioners recommend against settling them in these townships and also recommend against settling them at Isle aux Allumettes as there is a white population there of about 800 requesting titles to that land. Suggests removing these Tribes to Manitoulin Island or some other land in the Upper Province and granting them £2 lOs per head annually. Adds that considering the value of their lands and the revenue from timber, this payment becomes an equitable charge upon the revenue of the Crown Lands. States that if their claim to annuities received by the Mississaugas of Alnwick is substantiated, they should share in the annuity.
