- Interpretation panel at 4291-4299, boulevard Saint-Laurent, from the series « La Main, toujours de son temps – Sherbrooke/Mont-Royal / The Main, Forever in Tune – Sherbrooke/Mont-Royal » installed by Les Amis du boulevard Saint-Laurent in 2010. The ensemble at the southeast corner of Saint-Laurent Boulevard and Vallières Street was constructed before 1890. After undergoing several modifications over time , its brick façades, with large display windows at street level and a false-mansard top, have recently been restored . From the 1880s until the 1940s, the property belonged to merchant Charles Fabien Vinet and his descendants. It was then divided into three separate sections. Between 1945 and 1979, the corner section belonged to Sarah Sumagin, wife of merchant Joe Cooperman, and Cooperman’s Fruit Market occupied the corner shop (4299). To the north, Vallières Square was a favourite gathering place for the Jewish community . It was renamed parc du Portugal in 1975 to honour the neighbourhood’s growing Portuguese population. Starting in 1979, the three sections of 4291-4299 Saint-Laurent were acquired by carpenter Gabriel Pereira , who had immigrated from the Azores Islands. In 1968, he founded Azores Hardware, which rented various shops on the Main before moving into 4299 . Today it is managed by his sons. Although designed as apartments, the upper levels of 4291-4299 Saint-Laurent were used for manufacturing rubber goods, upholstery and clothing from the 1930s until the 1970s. In the late 1970s, one flat was the headquarters of the Portuguese Democratic Movement, a political party founded in Portugal in 1969. Today, these floors are apartments again.
