Scope & content
Interpretation panel at 4067-4075, boulevard Saint-Laurent, from the series « La Main, toujours de son temps – Sherbrooke/Mont-Royal / The Main, Forever in Tune – Sherbrooke/Mont-Royal » installed by Les Amis du boulevard Saint-Laurent in 2010. In 1890, four small homes occupied the site of 4067-4075 Saint-Laurent . They dated to before 1886, when the Main between Bagg Street and Mount-Royal Avenue was part of the Saint-Jean-Baptiste suburb. Their occupants, including Daniel Caisse, M.D., and electrotyper Andrew Morrison, enjoyed splendid views of Mount Royal. The property was acquired in 1920 by merchant Joseph Horn and manufacturer Louis Cohen, who built the current edifice in 1923-24. The Horn Building is decorated with the emblems symbolizing the ethnic origins of the main groups that made up Montreal’s population in the 19 th century . Its prime occupant until 1970 was the Eagle Publishing Company , which published the Canadian Jewish Chronicle, the Jewish Daily Eagle and other English and Yiddish publications. Early street-level occupants included Cohen’s Boot Shop and Horn’s Restaurant. On the upper levels were manufacturers such as Gold Brothers, Fit-Rite Cloak Co., Ideal Shoulder Pad Co. Ltd. and Art Linen Manufacturing Co. Ltd. The latter company, which made draperies and linens, bought the property in 1945. Horn’s Restaurant became Al’s Snack Bar, then Hy’s Restaurant, then Restaurant Jimmy and finally La Cuillère. The upper floors continued to house manufacturers until the late 1980s. Since then, occupants include film companies and organizations such as Quebec Gay Archives and Divers Cité Montréal. Beacon Luminaire has occupied the ground floor since 1989. Illustrations : 1 Chas.
