Scope & content
Interpretation panel at 4040-4060, boulevard Saint-Laurent, from the series « La Main, toujours de son temps – Sherbrooke/Mont-Royal / The Main, Forever in Tune – Sherbrooke/Mont-Royal » installed by Les Amis du boulevard Saint-Laurent in 2010. The large lot at the northwest corner of Saint-Laurent Boulevard and Duluth Avenue was one of the last holdings of the Stanley Bagg Estate to be sold in 1911. From 1889 until 1911, its house and stables were rented by master carters. In 1911-12, manufacturer Abraham M. Vineberg erected an eight-storey tower that occupied the entire lot. The Vineberg Building , one of Montreal’s first edifices with a reinforced concrete structure and envelope, was constructed during the winter. Its minimalist architecture, inspired by the Chicago School, features an elegant entrance, large windows and an impressive cornice . Designed to house clothing factories, the building was sold in 1913 to Alan Judah Hart , a director of H. Vineberg & Co. Ltd. Owned by Harris Vineberg and manufacturer of Progress Brand clothing, this company had been an occupant of the building since 1912 and became its owner in 1917. The structure was renamed the Berman Building in 1950, when it was purchased by Norman Holdings Corporation, a company of Joseph Berman, who owned some knitting mills in it. With the decline of the needle trade in the 1980s, the property was purchased by Espace 22 , a group of 22 individuals involved in the art scene. Transformed into a co-property in 1987 and painted green shortly afterwards, 4040-4060 Saint-Laurent remains a hub for creative people to this day.
