Scope & content
Series consists of 8,840 digital photographs taken by William Conway of Progress Photography that document the full renovation work for the Union Station Revitalization Project (USRP) from 2010 to 2021.Union Station officially opened to the public in 1927. Designed by Ross and Macdonald, H.G. Jones and J.M. Lyle, this iconic Toronto landmark is considered the finest example of stations built in the classical Beaux-Arts style in Canada. It was designated a National Historic Site by Parks Canada in 1975. When the City of Toronto acquired Union Station from the Toronto Terminals Railway Company Limited (TTR) in 2000, it assumed responsibility for maintaining the heritage building. In 2008, City Council approved the Union Station Revitalization Project (USRP), a major renovation aiming to promote transit growth, improve pedestrian movement, restore heritage elements, and transform Union Station into a major Toronto destination. The $824 million USRP project began in 2010 and took 12 years to complete, ending in July 2021. The project entailed a 14% increase to Union Station floor space; triple capacity for the GO Concourses; improvements to the Bay and York Concourses, an additional 14,900 square metres of new retail space; expanded PATH access; Front Street, York Street and Bay Street glass moat covers; and significant heritage restoration of the Great Hall.William Conway was hired by Vanbots Construction Corporation to provide photography services to document the progress of the USRP renovation project. He took photographs of the construction work at Union Station about once per month starting in March 2010 to July 2021. Photographs show workers, construction machinery, interior and exterior building views, and architectural details at different phases of the renovation project. Series is arranged chronologically into sets of files representing each photography shoot.
