- Scope & content
- Series consists of 4,204 photographs documenting the visual history of the Argonaut Rowing Club from its beginnings in 1872, up to 2008. Photographs feature athletes of the Argonaut Rowing Club, its scullers, rowing crews, and Toronto Argonaut football teams, as well as members, coaches and executives who served with the club. Rowing champions affliated with the Argonauts such as Joe Wright Sr. and Jr., Doc Durnan, Chet Turner, Jack Flavelle, Herb Miller, Charles Campbell, Ken Thorburn, and many others are well represented in this collection. Photographs exhibit Argonaut Rowing Club participation in numerous Canadian and international rowing competitions such as the Dominion Day Regatta, Canadian Royal Henley Regatta, Henley Royal Regatta, and the Olympic Games Regatta. Collection also includes photographs of Argonaut clubhouses on the Toronto waterfront. The photographs were collected and organized by long-time Argonaut Rowing Club member and club historian George McCauley, who actively sought out historical materials of the club for over a half-century. The photographs were acquired from a variety of sources: old-time Argonauts and their families, the Argonaut Rowing Club, Alexandra Studio, J. Bruce Manson, and newspaper collections. Many of the photographs were taken by McCauley. The collection also consists of McCauley's library of 29 photograph albums that include 1,045 reference prints, which are organized into broad subjects like "Olympics" and "Eights." These prints are accompanied by well-researched annotations by McCauley that identify people, events, and locations in the photographs. There are also over 200 vintage photographs, many of which are portraits, documenting the early years of the club prior to 1910. There are hundreds of original snapshots of Argonaut rowers and regattas taken by various club members between 1910 and 1950. There are 1,532 negatives: about two-thirds of which are originals; the others copies. Original negatives include a total of 229 photographs by J. Bruce Manson from the 1920s, over 200 negatives by Alexandra Studio from the 1930s - 82 of which are glass-plates - and an assortment of smaller sets from various institutions and individuals. Additionally, there are nearly 400 original negatives by George McCauley covering his early years with the Argonaut Rowing Club, from 1946 up to his participation with the Argonaut Olympic Eight at the 1952 Helsinki Olympic Games.
