- Scope & content
- Collection consists of photographs, scrapbooks, programs, newsletters, medals and awards, and other materials relating to the Argonaut Rowing Club from 1872 to 2013. The records were collected by long-time member and club historian George McCauley over a period of about 50 years. The collection contains 4,701 photographs that include hundreds of vintage photographs of early Argonaut scullers and crews in the 19th century, numerous original prints and negatives of Argonaut Rowing Club rowers, club executives, regattas such as the C.A.A.O. Royal Canadian Henley Regatta, Royal Henley Regatta, and the Olympic Games, Toronto Argonaut football teams, clubhouses, award banquets, and photography from Alexandra Studio, Pringle & Booth, J. Bruce Manson, and George McCauley. Collection contains a wide range of printed Argonaut Rowing Club material such as published by-laws and constitions from 1883-1967, annual reports and year books from 1890-1915, and various Argonaut publications and newsletters from 1911-2013. There are membership lists, club notices, and invitations to Argonaut events such as dances, banquets, and special meetings held by the club from 1885-1972. Material includes a comprehensive collection of well over 200 programs for the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta, spanning 1880 to 1997, Argonaut Rowing Club events such as the Dominion Day Regatta and annual Spring and Fall Regattas from 1885-2008, the Henley Royal Regatta, Olympic Games Regatta, the N.A.A.O. and other rowing competitions, and football games played by the Toronto Argonauts and Canadian Rugby Football Union teams from 1907-1953. A total of 11 newspaper scrapbooks about the Argonaut Rowing Club from 1920-1966 form part of this collection. Other material includes a set of 71 rowing and football ribbons, and a small assortment of trophies, plaques and medals from the Argonaut Rowing Club, the C.A.A.O. the N.A.A.O., and other clubs and regattas across North America dated between 1891-1965. Collection also includes four smaller collections of material acquired by McCauley. Thee records include: photographs of University of Toronto rowing crews and an album of the 1930 British Empire Games from former Argonaut cox and University of Toronto professor Tom Loudon; a set of invitations and programs from Argonaut Olympian, Julius A. Thomson from the 1908 London Olympic Games and 1911 King George V coronation; a set of 1920-1923 Toronto Canoe Club programs from J. Bruce Manson; and 120 photographs and 17 medals that belonged to Argonaut oarsman Geoffrey B. Taylor from 1907-1915. Collection also includes a set of research files and a book and journal collection put together and maintained by McCauley. The research files were created in the 2000s and cover a range of historical subjects relating to the Argonaut Rowing Club, its history, members, rowing crews and football teams, awards, as well as Toronto waterfront lands owned by the club over its years of existence. The library contains about 90 books relating to rowing, mostly reference volumes, as well as large runs of rowing periodicals such as the British journal Rowing: the National Magazine for Oarsmen, and those issued by the Canadian Amateur Rowing Association.
