Scope & content
Fonds consists of 369 digital photographs documenting corner stores and laneway details in Toronto, between 2005 and 2009. These images represent self-directed artistic projects from a person who had spent his life in social work in the neighbourhoods of Toronto. In these projects, Marker's interests lay in documenting vanishing elements and surviving timeless details characteristic of the city's neighbourhoods. In the corner stores project, the term is used loosely to refer to any neighbourhood stores, not just those on actual street corners. Generally, though, although many of those documented are no longer active and have been converted to alternate uses, all were at some point some sort of variety or convenience store, serving as a neighbourhood gathering place as much as a shopping destination. With the other project, many aspects of the haphazard accumulation of details that characterize Toronto's laneways are documented, with a focus on the garages one finds there. For the most part, the images were taken in the Beaconsfield, Dovercourt Park, East York, Junction Triangle, Seaton Village and Wallace-Emerson areas of Toronto.
