- Scope & content
- Series consists photographs documenting the activities, equipment, and personnel of the Toronto Fire Department between the years 1924 and the mid-1980s. The images predominantly record the larger fires in the Toronto area but also include equipment and staff. The fires documented are not small house fires but the more significant two and three alarm fires, i.e. those involving staff and equipment from more than one station. Sources within the TFD would inform Mr. Lee when multiple alarm fires were in progress and he would drive to the scene and take pictures. These images typically show fire fighters extinguishing the blaze as well as the post-fire damage to the structure. As well, when large fires occurred in adjacent municipalities such as York, Etobicoke, Malton, and Weston, the TFD would be called in to assist. Images of these “assist calls” to neighbouring municipal Fire Departments are included as well. The equipment shots are well composed, and often taken in front of their Fire Stations. Photographs of personnel are taken in a variety of poses. Some are formally posed, such as a Fire Chief standing in front of equipment or a station. Others are action shots taken at the scene of a blaze while fire fighters are at work.
