- Scope & content
- Series consists of slides showing commercial, residential, and parkland development in the Township and Borough of Etobicoke. With a focus on multiple unit dwellings (e.g., apartments and multiplex homes), plazas and shopping centres, and service stations, these colour slides document the evolution of Etobicoke's built environment in the decades following World War II. In addition to views of the built environment, this series contains a small number of landscape photographs documenting proposed parkland (the valley of the west branch of the Humber River) and undeveloped tracts of land slated for future retail or public works development (e.g., Cloverdale Mall, Rexdale Plaza, Humber Valley Sewage Disposal Plant). Also included in the series are photographs showing examples of commercial and residential development in other parts of the Greater Toronto Area, New York state, and New Jersey. Likely taken for informational and reference purposes, these photographs document sites such as the neighbourhoods of Silver Hills and Flemington Park in North York, housing in Peel Village and Bramalea, Bergen Mall Shopping Centre in New Jersey, and the Cross County Shopping Centre in Yonkers, New York. While the creator of the slides is unknown, they appear to have been arranged, described, and maintained by the City of Etobicoke's Clerk's Dept. for their archives. Slides were arranged into 29 files by loosely grouped subjects such as "Apartments" or "Service Stations" and assigned an alphanumeric code composed of the letter S for slide and a number indicating its position in the series (e.g., S1 is the first file of slides). This arrangement has been retained. Individual files may contain a more detailed list of location references.
