Scope & content
Fonds consists of administrative, legislative, financial, and photographic records documenting the operation of the City of Etobicoke and its predecessor municipalities, the Township of Etobicoke and the Borough of Etobicoke. A substantial part of the fonds consists of records documenting the debates and decisions of Council, such as Council minutes, resolutions, and by-laws. Also included are minutes of the Board of Control, as well as minutes and reports of other committees of Council. These records cover a wide range of municipal functions, including finance, land use planning, public works, social services, and other municipal services. Some municipal responsibilities are documented in greater depth in records series from the municipal departments and other boards. These include parks and recreation, public health, and planning. General information about the municipality, including elected representatives, history, origin of street names, and statistics, can be found in the Protocol Office and Clerk's Office series. Records that reveal the financial functioning of the municipality include tax assessment records, which provide property details as well as tax information. Other financial records include auditors' reports and financial statements. Several series containing agreements reveal details about contracted services, collective bargaining with unions, and other agreements between the municipal government and other parties. They cover a variety of services, including the construction and maintenance of municipal buildings, and the provision of roads and sewers. Photographic records document the growth of Etobicoke and the activities of its elected officials, municipal employees, and citizens, with an emphasis on the period from 1952-1985. Lastly, fonds consists of records relating to cemeteries found in Etobicoke, with particular reference to upkeep and maintenance, as well as the closure of cemeteries and the transfer of bodies from one cemetery to another.
