Scope & content
Series consists of photographs taken of the east and west sides of Yonge Street going north from 280 Teraulay street (south of Dundas Street) to 1560 Heath Street (north of St. Clair Avenue). The photographs document Yonge Street prior to the building of the Yonge Subway line. It would appear Allan Lamport commissioned the photographs, taken by Toronto photographer Ernest, as part of his proposal for the widening of Yonge Street. This proposal was put forward as a means of reducing traffic congestion. However, both the TTC and the Planning Board argued that the estimated expenditure of over $9,000,000 would not be necessary once the Yonge subway was built, and the streetcar tracks were removed from Yonge Street. The proposed idea was shelved.
