Scope & content
Series consists of photographs taken by Inglis to document its facilities, products, events, and staff. Shown are several Inglis locations, notably the Strachan Avenue factory, the Scarborough factory (sometimes under the name of English Electric), and the Stoney Creek facility. Series is a thorough documentation of Inglis' activities from the 1940s to the early 1970s, with a small amount of earlier and later material. Series includes photographs of products being made in Inglis factories, as well as in use or being installed in other facilities. Large industrial equipment such as turbines and tanks, domestic appliances such as washing machines, and munitions are all covered. The machinery Inglis used to produce these items is also shown, both still and in action. The administrative side of the business that supported industrial production, such as the sales force and showrooms, is also shown. Both male and female workers are shown in many photographs. Also documented are significant events, such as the production of the 100,000th Bren gun and visits by government officials. The Inglis munitions factories during World War II are well represented, including images of guns and ammunition, workers, and visits to the plants by government officials (such as the Duke of Kent, Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King, and members of the Chinese military). Social events attended by Inglis workers during the 1950s and 1960s are also shown, including golf and bowling tournaments, dinners, and retirement celebrations. Some photographs have an Inglis stamp on the back and may have been taken by Inglis employees. Many others were taken by a variety of commercial photographers and institutions, including but not limited to Advertising and Commercial Photographers, Alexandra Studios, Turofsky, Gilbert A. Milne, Jones and Morris, Anderson and Cole, Rapid Grip and Batten Ltd., Pringle and Booth, Beck and Poole, George Hunter Photography, Harold K. White Studio, Roseborough and Rice, McGlenister and Brisson, Howard Photographic Studios, Ron Vickers, Ricards Arless Associates, Pettitt Photos, Jack Cash, Stollery, Hayward Studios, Luehr Studio, Trotter Studio, Eisenstat, Andrei Andersson, Artona Productions, Bob Warren for "The Shotgun," The Toronto Star, The Globe and Mail, The Evening Telegram, Engineering Contract Record, Ontario Hydro, and Hydro-Quebec. In particular, the negatives in Files 438 to 877 were taken by Richard Mathews. Prints of many of Mathews' images can be found in earlier files in this series.
