Scope & content
Fonds consists of the records of the John Inglis Co. Ltd., one of Canada's largest and longest-lasting industrial firms. Fonds thoroughly documents Inglis' activities almost from its beginnings, starting in the late 19th century with its manufacture of industrial equipment such as pumps and engines, through its production of munitions and turbines for navy vessels during World War II, into its post-war concentration on enormous turbines for major power plants, as well as domestic appliances such as washing machines and refrigerators. The vast textual records in the fonds cover all aspects of the business. Core corporate documents include annual reports (Series 1847) and financial statements (Series 1848). Also important are Board of Directors' meeting minutes and reports to the Board. These are scattered throughout the fonds, particularly in series named for specific personnel, and can be found by keyword searching. A wide variety of administrative records series (Series 1869 to 1892, arranged by corporate section and titled with the name of the manager heading the section) contain details of Inglis' administration. These records include correspondence, contracts, specifications, reports, inventories, etc. Fonds includes a great many plans and drawings of Inglis products, starting in the late 1800s. Plans exist in both hard copy and on microfilm; the amount of overlap is not known. Not only do the plans provide engineering and technological details, they also illustrate the wide variety of products Inglis produced over the years, from engines and mining equipment to storage tanks and steam turbines. Thousands of photographs document Inglis' products, events, and staff. Particularly well documented are World War II munitions production, and post-war production of industrial and power plant equipment. Other visual material includes illustrations of Inglis household appliances and buildings. Overall, fonds gives a comprehensive picture of a longstanding company over a century of development and change. It will be of interest to anyone researching Canadian engineering, manufacturing, or business.
