Fonds consists of two series of photographic and other records relating to the Northern Railway of Canada, the Toronto Grey and Bruce Railway, and the Toronto and Nipissing Railway. There are two photographic series, one containing Northern Railway of Canada photographs (ca. 1858-1863), the other comprised of Toronto Grey and Bruce, and Toronto and Nipissing Railway photographs (1871-1879). The railway photographs are among the earliest in the City of Toronto Archives' collection. They provide unique documentation of the railway lines linking Toronto to the timber reserves of Simcoe County; to Barrie on Lake Simcoe; and to Collingwood on Georgian Bay, which was a trans-shipment point to the American Midwest.Fonds also contains plans of buildings built and used by the Toronto Grey and Bruce Railway, a history of that railway, and newspaper clippings about railways.
