- 2 Saturday, July 27, 1968 The Ottawa JournalFACES OF OTTAWALeo OstererBy W. Q. KETCHUMLEO OSTERER AT HIS STANDOSTERER, FannyAustrian-born Leo Osterer is part of a dwindling group—the owner of a corner store. He has operated a confectionery store at 136 Florence Street (at Lyon) for 41 years. Mr. Osterer came to Canada in 1923 with $10 in U.S. funds. Before going into business on his own, he worked for the Ottawa Iron Works and Baker Brothers. His first take home pay was $4 weekly.NEW BUILDINGHe bought the property where his present business and home are located and replaced the building, which had been a laundry, with a structure designed to meet the requirements of a corner store.Refrigeration, he feels, is one of the greatest boons of this era. He recalls earlier days when Borden's Dairy delivered ice cream in containers packed with salt and ice.He came to Canada at 19 and thinks Canada is the most wonderful country in the world. "There isn't anything I wouldn't do for Canada," he says.WAR VETERANProving these words were more than lip service, he joined the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps, enlisting with No. 1 Transport Company. His duties eventually took him to the British Isles, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He served from 1941 to 1947.He has been a member of B'nai Jacob for 40 years and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows for a quarter of a century.Mrs. Osterer is the former Fanny Glustein. There are two children: Joseph, of Ottawa, who runs a home soft drink service, and Betty, the wife of Sidney Finkelman, a chartered accountant at Kirkland Lake.Read automatically; may contain mistakes.
