- Scope & content
- Fonds consists of colour photographs taken by Peter Mintz, mostly of downtown Toronto, as part of his work for Tourism Toronto. Includes numerous views of the City skyline from various angles, as well as images of many prominent downtown attractions such as Harbourfront, the SkyDome (later Rogers Centre), Ontario Place, Toronto Island, Yonge-Dundas Square, and various museums, theatres and major performing arts venues. Also documents downtown neighbourhoods such as the financial district, Chinatown, Yorkville, the Distillery District and a few non-downtown locations such as the Sunnybrook Stables, along with images of events such as the Caribana festival.The vast majority of the images were taken in the spring and summer, but there are a few winter scenes, particularly ice skating at Harbourfront and at Nathan Phillips Square. Mintz particularly liked to take photographs from sunset to nightfall, and a number of images feature the same subject but at different times. A small number of the images appear to have been time exposures, and two are images superimposed one on another.As this fonds contains numerous images of the same scene, but taken at different times, it offers an excellent year-by-year visual record of Toronto's changing skyline since the late 1980s, offering evidence on ongoing development especially at Harbourfront and in the downtown core.
