- August 22nd 1943Should these memoirs ever be read the reader will notneed to be told that the writer is not a very brainyperson. However, he may concede that there are momentshiswhen my mind really does function. I think.May be this is one of them. Last night I turned overin my mind some of the statements which John had madeduring the evening. Especially his opinion that the Jewswould likely be exterminated completely in another twentyyears.I received the impression from him that the onlysolution was a full assimilation. This in spite of thefact of its failure in Germany. There it had been carried toits extreme limits.I wondered whether that as a peoplewe Jews had still something worth preserving fora changing world.I pondered on the remarkable fact thatfor fivethousand years the Jew has served continuouspersecution, persecution which at times almost reachedto the complete annihilation of the race. Time and timeagain it seemed that at last the Jew was to be exterminated, time and time again he survived. If the Jew is doomed fordestruction during the next two decades would not thecivilization which has stemmed from the law of Mosesalso be doomed. Scrap the ethics of the Jewsand the teachings of Christ or Budha and what have you left.In the early morning hours I asked myself if I hadright may not be her right.
