- 635 Grosvenor AvenueJuly 12th 1942Dear Ponyites.... It Is a long time since you have heard from the senior ponyite. He has ,however, written to Monty a few times, Herbie once and Gerald once. In short I have fallen down on the job. It is nowmidnight,Saturday and we have had dinner downtown with friends. Also we saw Leslie Howard in Mr V... some good acting in a poorly constructed film. Probably you have seen it. Not nearly as good as Munich Express, or the Hitchcock pictures.I am not going to write about the progress of the war you know as much and more than I do. However, for matter of record,at this moment the Libyan front is still the scene of a heavy battle ,result in doubt, the Russian front is in a precarious way,and there is no scrap of comfort for the moment for our side.By the time this reaches you,Monty or Gerald, the whole picture may have changed.A more profitable discussion is the Canadian political situation. Mackenzie King now of course has the authority to put all out conscription of the Canadian forces into law at anytime. With the battles going against us,this may happen before this letter reaches the other side. The budget is of course accepted wit out complaint. It is very drastic. One hundred percent excess profit tax ( forced savings of twenty percent, a good thing) and very heavy income taxes also a twenty five percent luxury tax.Probably papers with these details have already reached you. The weakness is that capital still remains uncontiscated although income beyond the necessarites of life has. The very wealthy can still manage nicely by useing part of their capital (this I know really means part confiscation) but a man can buy up businesses and sell them at a profit and use the difference as income without being taxed.I know of a case M...a wealthy man who has been buying up concerns and then reselling them at a profit. The difference he pockets and the Government does not tax. The middle classes suffer the most and suffer more than the wage earners. The situation in Quebec is for the time quiet but there will no doubt be something of a blaze when the Government insist on conscription for overseas.A citizen army for defence of ten thousand has been formed in Montreal . Business and professional men not eligible for active service and between the ages of seventeen and fprty five are accepted. They go to camp for twn weeks and have regular drill. Allan Brontman has joined up for this service. Then we have a very powerful mobile squad of private citizens, in case of local trouble I imagine both these serices would be used. There is agitation for the release from internment camps of Commhnists. This ridiculous situation will I hope be rectified soon.Read automatically; may contain mistakes.
