- Scope & content
- Petition: (French; English translation attached) based on council of previous day. Nominal return of squatters on islands and other land forming part of the hunting grounds of the Algonquins and Nipissings of the Lake of the Two Mountains. List includes names of squatters; acreage occupied by them; and amount of rent owed covering the period Nov. 1838 to Nov. 1843. Note by James Hughes, Superintendent Indian Department dated Oct. 17, 1843 advises that many more squaners have come to occupy these lands since 1838 when survey of occupancy was performed. Also states the acreages given by squatters is incorrect as they are occupying much more land than they admitted.
