- Scope & content
- Letter with rough copy: forwarding Captain LaMothe's letter of Oct. 29, 1824 along with Johnson's analysis of the matter. Advises that the Royal Proclamation specifically states that the Indians shall not be deprived of the lands claimed by them unless they are disposed to sell them. Adds that extensive grants have been made of the territory claimed by the Algonquins and Nipissings without any compensation being made to them. States that these tribes have no revenue producing land and are completely dependent on the hunt for their support. Advises that the Indians observed the boundaries of each others' territory and Darling's statement that these lands belong to all tribes would be viewed as an invasion of one civilized state by another. States that these tribes do not expect the lands already granted to others will be returned to them, but request a proclamation forbidding others to hunt on their unoccupied territory. Comments that this request is reasonable and these Tribes deserving. Enclosures incl. extract of councils 1798/07/19 (indexed above) and 1791/07/14 (indexed above). Enclosed is reference to map (none enclosed) from Surveyor Adams to Surveyor General Bourchette stating that the map was drawn up by Mr. Adams and rough sketch furnished by the Indians of the Lake of the Two Mountains and sent to Bouchette.
