Scope & content

This photograph depicts the first location of the Montefiore Orphans’ Home (1918-1936) located on Jeanne-Mance. It was also the third location of the Herzl Dispensary for 12 years between 1936 and 1948. It provided health care to Jewish immigrants and the poor for little or no charge. Over many years the dispensary changed locations until 1973, when it finally settled in the Jewish General Hospital and became known as the Herzl Family Practice Centre. It was shared with the Jewish Children’s Welfare Agency in the 1950s and then in the 1960s it was a nursery school for Neighbourhood House. © JGH Archives HGJ. ID #1-11.9.9.2.
