Scope & content
Fonds consists of photographs taken by Pete Doherty of boxers in the gym, the ring, or at their homes. Doherty brings both his own experience as a boxer and a strong aesthetic eye to his photographs. His portraits reveal qualities which are inherent in the sport of boxing: strength and vulnerability, while at the same time capturing the humour of the change room.Fonds includes images of boxers at Sully's Boxing Gym, Unitas Gym, Etobicoke Olympium, Atlas Boxing Club, Stockyards Boxing Gym and HUF Gym. The boxers are shown training or sparring with other boxers. These images also offer a glimpse of the mentoring that can occur between the trainers/coaches and the younger men who are learning the sport. These photos also show boxing matches at the Royal York Hotel, Hershey Centre, Powerade Centre, the Docks Nightclub, and Hevan's Banquet Hall. Many of the pictures reveal the interactions between boxers and referees. The photographs taken at the Royal York Hotel show a black-tie fundraising event where the boxing match was used to raise money to support the Shaw Festival at Niagara-on-the-Lake. These images are particularly interesting because they reveal the reactions of the well-heeled spectators.
