900 Sherbrooke Street West.Montreal, November 20, 1929.To the President and Members of the Jurists' Commission800 Sherbrooke Street West.Gentlemen:The Montreal Local Council of Women, a federation of forty-seven women's Societies, was organized in the year 1893, for the purpose of promoting the united action of its members, in matters of common one public interest, and more particularly sanctions affecting women and children. Since its inception it has been very active in endeavours to remove the political, professional and legal disabilities which affect the women of the Province of Quebec. The Local Council therefore respectfully requests your honourable Commission to kindly give careful consideration to the following statement:Apart from the political and professional disabilities which affect women, whether single, married or widowed, and which are presumably not included in the scope of the Commission, the civil disabilities of women are largely those arising from marriage. Under the Civil Code, widows and single women (no longer minors) enjoy the legal status of men.Considering the articles of the Civil Code in the order in which they appear, the Local Council submits the advisability of amending various articles, taken up under the following headings, and accompanied by suggestions and reasons for the same.Read automatically; may contain mistakes.
