Ce plan présente une section des États-Unis (depuis la Pennsylvanie en allant vers le nord) et le Canada (provinces du Bas-Canada et du Haut-Canada, depuis le lac Érié au sud-ouest, jusqu'à la Côte-Nord), en 1872. Les noms et limites des différentes entités administratives (provinces, districts, etc.) y sont précisés, notamment à l'aide de couleurs. Le document comporte par ailleurs trois plans complémentaires : "Environs of Montreal" (grande région de Montréal), "Newfoundland" (Terre-Neuve) et "Continuation of map to the Pacific, showing British Columbia & Manitoba" (carte du Canada depuis l'Océan Pacifique jusqu'à l'Océan Atlantique).
