Scope & content
Fonds consists of photographs by Robert Burley and Debra Friedman which were exhibited at The Photo Passage, Harbourfront May 1 to July 18, 1999. They document Strachan House which opened in 1996 in a City-owned building at 53 Strachan Avenue providing a unique form of self-governing, public housing for chronically homeless people who had been labelled by the system as "hardest to house." Designed by Levitt Goodman Architects in an abandoned 19th century warehouse, Strachan House was the second Street City Development Project for homeless people initiated and administered by the Homes First Society with inter-governmental funding. Levitt and Goodman Architects received a 1999 Governor General's Award for Excellence in Architecture for the design. The photographs provide exterior and interior views of the building, as well as 13 portraits of residents. Nine of the portraits have been combined with photographs of their living spaces to form diptychs. Throughout the documentation process Debra Friedman concentrated on making the portraits while Robert Burley photographed the architecture. There are also two drawings of the building, which show the Wellington Street elevation, and floor plans for all three floors.
