Scope & content
Collection consists of colour slides taken or collected by Desmond Edward Wainright (1925-2012), the youngest child of Gerald Desmond Wainright (1892-1958) and Elsie Louise Wainright (nee Craxton, 1884-1981), who married in 1913. His older sister was named Elsie Evaline (1914-1984). Wainright's father was a carpenter with the TTC, while his mother is sometimes listed in city directories as an employee at Brighton Laundry. Wainright never married and lived with his parents and sister for most of his life, except for a brief period in the late 1960s when he lived with four other people in a rooming house. From 1925 until 1958 or 1959, the family lived at 596 Delaware Ave., moving to 460 Durie Ave. after Gerald's death. By 1965, the family had moved to 137 Priscilla Ave. in York, where Wainright stayed until at least 2001 -- the final year city directories were published. Wainright served in the army for nearly 20 years, earning the Canadian Forces Decoration for his service in 1959. His occupation was listed as "retired" in the 1972 census; however, in later years he is listed in city directories as a bank guard or security guard. Wainrights's photographs are a mixture of family pictures, images taken at various sites in Toronto, travel pictures of Niagara Falls and New Brunswick, and shots taken at Camp Borden in Ontario and at CFB Gagetown in New Brunswick.
