Scope & content
Series consists of photographs which document graffiti and street art in the streets and laneways of Toronto. Allen's focus in photographing graffiti is largely on the characters found in these forms of street expression, what he calls the "faces of graffiti." The images document graffiti in its various forms, including tags, throws and pieces, and a range of street art activities, from stencils to stickers to community murals. Included are examples of both sanctioned and un-sanctioned activities. Amongst the many walls are several done under the aegis of various community and City-sponsored programs, including Community Centres, BIAs and programs such as Street Art Toronto (StART) and the Graffiti Transformation Project, reflecting the complex interactions between artists, community groups and city programming.
